The Vision

The owners of a classic Leichhardt federation home came to us wanting to bring their underutilised backyard to life. Their goal was a generous entertaining deck that respected the home's heritage character while creating a modern outdoor space for family gatherings and long summer evenings in the Inner West.

The Challenge

Like many Inner West properties, the yard sat on an uneven, sloping block with an existing concrete slab and established garden beds the owners wanted to keep. Preserving the mature lemon tree and rear garden while still achieving a full-width deck required careful planning around the existing footprint.

The Solution

We designed a raised subframe system using galvanised steel posts set clear of the existing garden beds, allowing the deck to float above the yard without disturbing the landscape below. For the decking boards we chose spotted gum hardwood — a native Australian timber perfectly suited to Sydney's humid summers and afternoon sun. A frameless glass balustrade along the rear boundary keeps the space open and airy, in keeping with the relaxed Inner West lifestyle.
